David Blackburn

David Blackburn was born in Huddersfield in 1939 and despite long spells as a visiting lecturer, artist and professor in both Australia and America, he keeps returning to his Yorkshire roots, choosing to  live and work there. His work is internationally acclaimed and represented in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York. While studying at the Royal College of art (RCA), David Blackburn met some of the great influences of his life including Gerhart Frankl, who introduced him to the work of Australian artists, and Kenneth Clark who purchased drawings and became a patron and advisor. In 1999, Blackburn celebrated his sixtieth birthday along with a touring exhibition previewed in Leeds, Chicago and London. There are two major monographs published on his work. He has exhibited widely including several exhibitions at the Hart Gallery where he is represented, Winchester Cathedral, 2003 Montpesson House as part of the Sailsbury Festival, 2004. Recent group exhibitions include, Land and Life: The landscape in Art, Leister Art Gallery and Museum, 2008 and the London Art Fair, 2005-2008. His work is held in many other public collections including British Council, London,  Contemporary Art Society, London amongst many others and was Invited Artist at Éigse’s thirty year retrospective at Visual in 2010.
