Enda Bowe

Enda Bowe’s work is concerned with storytelling and the search for light and beauty in the ordinary. He presents his work through exhibition and the publication of photographic monographs. Influences in his work include writers John McGahern and Carson McCullers, poet John Glenday, and directors Lynne Ramsey, Ken Loach, Eve Arnold and Lenny Abrahamson.

To date Bowe’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum , London, Red Hook Gallery, New York, the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, the National Portrait Gallery, London, Fotohof, Salzburg, Fotomuseum, Winterthur, The Gallery of Photography, Dublin and The Visual Centre Of Contemporary Art, Ireland. Enda received the Taylor Wessing Portrait Second Prize 2018 at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

His collection of work ‘At Mirrored River’ received the international Solas Photography Award 2015 and was nominated for the Prix Pictet Award 2016 and the Deutsche Borse Foundation Photography Prize 2016. Bowe’s first monograph ‘Kilburn Cherry’ published by J&J Books received the Birgit Skiold Artist Award 2014, Whitechapel Gallery London.

In self-publishing the photobook ‘At Mirrored River’ the artist was kindly supported by the Victoria & Albert Museum, oscar nominated directors Ken Loach and Lenny Abrahamson, and writer Colm Toibín. This book coincided with the exhibition of ‘At Mirrored River’ at The Visual Centre of Contemporary Art, Ireland which ran from 2nd July to 16th October 2016.

His third monograph “This Thing I Want. I Know Not What’, inspired by Carson McCuller’s “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, was published by Paper Tiger Books in Sept 2018. His fourth monograph ‘Bird to the Air’ will be published by Plum Plum Books in spring 2019.

Enda is a committed artist who approaches both commissioned and personal projects with the same passion, dedication and attention to detail. He is from Ireland and lives and works in London.

Origins

Set up in 1992, The Carlow Art Collection is a voluntary community initiative that has been surrounded by goodwill and generosity from the people of Carlow. It has expanded into a diverse collection of work with artists from around the world. CAC became a fully registered charity in 2018. The home of our art collection is in Carlow College. The Carlow Art Collection is free to view in the front halls of Carlow College, Monday to Friday, and in the garden every day of the year.

Today

The art works in the permanent collection include painting, print, drawing, sculpture, sound, photography, live art, film and activism, with more to come. The collection and CAC projects reflect a broad range of art by over thirty artists, many of whom visited, exhibited, engaged with or lived in the area.

Our Goal

The CAC is deeply indebted to the artists who contribute to the collection, to its board members past and present, and to the many people and organisations that support it technically and financially. The Carlow Art Collection will continue to expand on the ideas of what art is and what an art collection can be, and become.
