Hans Tyrrestrup made his first public appearance as a painter in 1964 at only twenty one years old. Although he chose to take a university degree in Danish literature and language to teach in high school, he has pursued a successful international career as an artist. Stylistically Tyrrestrup’s work crosses many genre boundaries. In his early paintings from the 1960’s you can find traces of the action painti ng tradition and in the 1970’s his pictures have elements reminiscent of the surrealists. From the mid-80’s, his gesticulations become more lavish and free and his application of layers of paint invests the pictures with an ethereal character. Tyrrestrup has expanded his practice by studing widely, including at the Scandinavian artist’s residence, Rome 1986; Accademia di Danimarca, Rome 1988-89; San Cataldo, Itialia 1990-1999; Nordic Art Centre, Finland1991; The Mishkenot Sha’ananim Art Centre, Jerusalem 1995; and the Accademia di Danimarca, Rome 2008. Recent Solo exhibitions include, Ribe Art Museum, Denmark 2004; Vestjyllands Kunstmuseum, Denmark 2007; Museum Holmen, Denmark 2008. Recent group exhibitions include Baltic Bridges, National Art Museum, Kaunas, Latvia 2006; Brekstad, Norway 2007; Krakow, Poland 2007; Daugavpils Museum – Mark Rothko, Latvia 2008; Fano Art Museum, Denmark 2009.
