Born in Manchester in 1953 and now based in Co. Mayo and London, Hughie O’Donoghue has been exhibiting internationally, in solo and group exhibitions, since 1982, gaining a reputation as one of the leading painters of his generation. He is well known for his acclaimed cycle of paintings depicting The Passion, where he explores the familiar narrative in expansive canvases painted with muted emotional expression. His painting are included in important public collections, including the National Gallery, London, the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester; and the Arts Council of England. Recent exhibitions include Lost Histories: Imagined Realities, Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, 2008; Parables, Centre Culturel Irelandais, Paris, 2008 and The Geometry Paths, James Hymen Gallery, London, 2008. HE also featured in a solo exhibition at Leeds Art Gallery 2008, and Visual 2017.
